ABOUT THE APPALOOSA HORSE
The Appaloosa Horse is believed to have originated in the Pacific Northwest with the Nez Perce Indian Tribe. The Nez Perce were the only Native Americans to practice selective breeding, using only the best horses to build their bands. When Chief Joseph surrendered to the US Cavalry in 1868 at the Bear Paw in Montana, the Nez Perce were forced to relinquish their horses. The Army quickly disbanded the herds and soon the characteristics so prized by the Nez Perce were lost or diluted by indiscriminate breeding. In 1936, the Appaloosa Horse Club was formed to promote and restore the Appaloosa's position in the horse world. In so doing, the Appaloosa horse began it's return from the brink of obscurity. Today, the Appaloosa horse is a versatile top-competitor in all disciplines - Halter, Western Pleasure, Reining, Roping, Dressage, Endurance, Pleasure Driving and on the race track. While the Appaloosa more than lives up to the athletic demands of today's serious competition, no other breed can duplicate the qualities and "heart" that make the Appaloosa unique...........
